We dropped off Maggie and headed to my Dad’s to crash. We have been going in and out of his place like a revolving door. We used it as a base once we became homeless.
Around 8am we headed to NY to meet up with Sarah and Cath. Sarah left Egypt last year and moved to the city so we decided to stop in and catch-up with her. Cath was home from Egypt and was able to meet us as well so we were ecstatic to see her too.
We got there around 11AM and headed out for second breakfasts. She took us to the cafe that was featured in “You’ve Got Mail” where the first meeting was suppose to take place but she got blown off by the mystery man. It was excellent food and was packed when we left, so great timing. Cath met us there so we headed back to Sarah’s to drop off her stuff and pick up Sarah’s laundry. (She has had guests non stop.)
We decided to roam around as Mike has never gotten the chance to be in the city to sight see, it has always been spent at an Embassy trying to get passports and visas. We started out from her place on 77th and headed to Central Park. I had never been thru the park so was looking forward to it.
Central Park was the first ever landscaped park in the US and was modeled after public grounds in London and Paris. In 1853 700 acres were acquired by eminent domain to become the park. Sadly the creating of the park displaced 1,600 residents, mostly Irish and German. In 1863 it extended its borders and destroyed and African American community, making it 843 acres.
Olmstead and Vaux designed the park taking into consideration 3 modes of transportation: carriage rides, walking trails, equestrian paths. Later the Zoo and Carousel were added and concerts and ball playing were allowed. It became a safe haven for children. Far cry from its not so recent violent past.
The park was enjoyable as we strolled through the Rambles and stopped to take a few photos.
We then left the park and headed to the legendary FAO Schwarz, the largest toy store in NY. Every time I had planned in the past to go in the lines have been to long as it was close to Christmas. We headed in and acted like kids should:
Chewbacca made out of Lego's.
Watch them play the piano from Big. They performed several pieces that were well done. Off to see if we could get tickets to a show. Sites along the way.
We all thought it interesting that small churches remained as the city grew around them.
St. Patrick’s is the US’s largest gothic-style church opened in 1879.
2 ton statue of Atlas in Rockefeller Center.
We got tickets to see “Promises, Promises” and then headed to lunch. We ate at an Irish bar and watched the end of the World Cup Germany vs. Uruguay. We then headed back out to meander. There was a large screen that captured pictures of the people walking by so we stopped to be photographed in the crowd.
Blue shirt with arms up in the middle of the Polaroid is Mike and me in the white shirt next to him.
We went to the Hershey's store and M&M store to find out our chocolate mood:
Then to the show. “Promises, Promises” with Sean Hayes from Will and Grace. Set in Manhattan in the 60’s it was excellent.
Next day we headed out for a walk and to catch the final World Cup game. Of course Sarah was rooting for Netherland’s as that is where she is from. We had a great time watching the game and learning Dutch phrases to yell at the TV. She came prepared to outfit us with Orange too!
Sad day for her!
Sad to leave but glad we got to catch-up.
