3rd Time is a Charm

We are currently residing in a hotel. We have moved 4 times in 5 days. Normally I would be thrilled to be exploring 4 different locations but 3 of these moves are all within the same place. You are wondering how I could have picked a place that required that many moves. The short answer, I didn’t.

I was asked to provide housing options and researched many choices;  AirBnB, short term apartment rentals, motels, VRBO and hotels. I looked through all these options and came up with 2 choices that were economical, livable and safe for the 35 days we would be living there. They also included daily full breakfast, an indoor pool, hot tub, and sizeable suite so we could be comfortable.

We were placed in neither of my choices and I am still a little bitter. All that research time has gone to waste and the place is not satisfactory. We moved in the rain on Wednesday. I was full of emotions as I closed down the house, packed away the last of the belongings, cleaned and moved items to storage and the new residence. I will not name it until we leave, fear of retaliation.

Mike met me around lunch time and we checked in. We asked about the construction happening and was told it was on the top floors. We were one floor below it. We asked if we could move rooms as we were there for 35 days and did not want to be near the construction. The location was full and we were told we could not move that day. They would keep us posted as to when we could move. I asked if they had a covered entrance to unload the vehicles and they smiled and said no. We hauled our possessions in the pouring rain and up to the floor below construction. When we exited the elevator you could hear the jack hammers doing their jobs, the pneumatic hammer beating heavily, loudly and repeatedly all the way to our room. I groaned. We unloaded and returned to the house to pick up the rest of the items to be moved. I finished packing, moving, cleaning, and said my goodbyes and left.

I sat in my car in the parking lot until I figured the drilling had stopped and I went up to the room. We decided to celebrate the closing of the house and go out to dinner. The restaurant we selected was one of the 1st places we tried when we arrived in 2019. We ordered our beers and our meals. The beers tasted like they had some cleaning solution in them. I asked for bottles instead which were provided and then she told us they were having issues with the keg lines and people had been complaining about the taste. I asked Mike why, why would they knowingly serve something they knew was tampered with.

After breakfast on Thursday I asked to move rooms. I was assured they would move us that day to the 1st or 2nd floor.  Around 1pm I checked in again and was given a great deal of run around by the manager on duty. He said the construction had stopped on the floor above us and would not be starting again for a month. No need to move. The construction, per the workers, had actually started that day on our floor. I was not going to stay there so they could move us or we would move to a new location. The person I previously spoke to overheard us and told him to move us to the available room on the 1st floor. We dragged all of our stuff to the 1st floor, thankfully Mike came home from work at lunchtime and helped me move.

Friday morning before work Mike takes a shower and informs me there is no hot water. We checked the sinks and that water is scalding hot. I go back to the front desk and ask that the hot water be fixed in the shower. She told me there had been issues with the hot water in the shower in the past. Really, then why put someone in the room that is planning to be there for 33 days when it is not fixed. She said she would have maintenance look at it. They called and said they fixed it and asked me to check on it. Nope, still no hot water. They would call back. They never did.

Saturday, we ask again to have the hot water in the shower fixed or to be moved. The maintenance man checks in on us around 1. He said he would check to see what the water room temperature was set to and increase it. I told him the sinks were plenty hot and that they checked the temperature yesterday. He said he would have our room changed. He said that this room had issues with the shower. I asked him why they put us in a room with no hot water when we were here for so long. He said he did not know but he would get us moved. He came back and told us they had a room available that day on the 4th floor. We said no because of the construction. He agreed that moving to the 4th floor did not make sense. Nothing else was available today. He assured us they would move us Sunday morning.

Sunday, we went down again to check to see what time we could move. She asked us why and we explained everything, again. She said no one left her any instructions about the move. She would see what she could do. Noon time she calls and has a new room for us on the 2nd floor. We collect the keys and inspect the room. We checked the water temp in the shower and sinks, we flushed the toilet, we opened the windows, and checked that we could control the thermostat. I opened the fridge, freezer, microwave and everything else I could think of to check. All looked good. We dragged all of our stuff to the 3rd room on the second floor.

Fingers are crossed that this is the last move for this stay. Did I mention that this place I did not select is also charging $2000 more than the places I selected. Just saying.  I am letting go of my bitterness now….now….ok maybe now. Ok. Maybe not.
